Everyone working at The Vet is an animal lover, and their care for animals doesn’t stop when they go home at the end of the day.
On a summer evening, Jane Baldwin, the company’s operations director and formerly a veterinary nurse, went for a walk and stumbled upon what looked like a baby weasel which had been abandoned by its parents. She left it for a couple of hours to make sure the parents weren’t nearby, but sadly after this time, there were still no parents in sight. She picked the little one up, kept it warm in her jumper, and took it to her local wildlife sanctuary where the young kit was fed and sheltered and later identified as being a young stoat which is very similar to a weasel but has a black tip on the end of its tail.
The stoat is recovering well; when she was first found, she wasn’t able to use her back legs, but every day she uses them more and more as she gets stronger. If the stoat makes a full recovery, it will be let out into the wild once it is able to look after itself.
If you come across wildlife that looks as though it needs your help, there are occasions when you can offer them the best chance of survival but sometimes it is best not to interfere. If you are unsure, we advise you to call up a wildlife organisation for advice, it is also a good idea to watch from a distance, as its family may be nearby.
